A baffling optical illusion is leaving puzzlers confused- with the creator claiming that you could have a top IQ if you can spot which way the cat is traveling within five seconds.
The puzzle, which was first shared in 2015 but has resurfaced online, sparked a furious debate after it was shared on 9GAG- and left users thoroughly confused.
The image features a cat on a gray flight of stairs and while the animal’s face looks at you, it is hard to see which way it is going.
Some pointed out that there is a stair lip in the image, which means that the cat is going down the stairs.

But others have said that because the staircase is mosaic, there would be a wooden protective lip on it and that it is actually going up the stairs.
Others said that the light is reflecting in a specific way which pointed out the answer for them.
With the light coming from the ceiling you might see the cat going down- or you may see it heading up with the light coming from downstairs.
Dedicated Reddit puzzlers also analyzed the cat’s posture and position of its paw to solve the mystery.
Business Insider concluded that the cat is traveling downstairs because of the architecture of the stairwell.
The nose of the stair treads overhangs the riser- which has a pebbled texture.
They added that there are shadows visible under the stair treads which means the cat is going downstairs.
Additionally, the publication said that the light from the upstairs landing causes the shadow of the tread to fall on the riser.
The illusion also sparked mixed reactions on Twitter, with one person writing: ‘The cat on the stairs’, is very definitely coming down the stairs! You can not build stairs with a protrusion on the top, at the edge. People would catch their heels on it and and fall.’
Another person quipped: ‘He’s going back and forth’ while a third said: ‘As long as the cat is facing me, it is facing up… I can see a cat whose goal is to reach the top.’
The illusion also sparked furious debate on Twitter with one person certain that the cat is facing up and ascending the stairs while others said the architecture of the structure means that the animal is going downstairs
